What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained in a Jives Media 2026 guide, shown on a laptop in a dark modern marketing office.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers. Those answers now show up in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot.

The audience is already there. Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode passed one billion monthly users a year after launch. AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion people a month. When a buyer asks one of these tools for a recommendation, a short list of brands comes back. AEO decides whether yours is on it.

Most AEO guides stop at “write clear content and add schema.” This one goes further. It shows how answer engines read your pages and which popular tactics have no evidence behind them. It also covers how to measure results without fooling yourself. If you want a team to run it for you, our AI SEO services cover AEO end to end.

Key takeaways

  • AEO means earning mentions and citations in AI answers. It builds on SEO. It does not replace it.
  • Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Crawler access comes first. A default Cloudflare setting or an old robots.txt rule can hide your site from ChatGPT entirely.
  • ChatGPT often reads only a 200-character snippet anchored on your H1. The top of the page carries most of the weight.
  • Mentions across the web, especially on YouTube, track AI visibility far more closely than backlinks do.
  • FAQ rich results disappeared from Google on May 7, 2026. FAQ schema is not an AEO shortcut, and neither is llms.txt.
  • AI answers change on almost every run. Report visibility as a percentage across many prompt runs, never as a “rank.”
  • GA4, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools each show part of the picture. None of them shows all of it.

1. How should you define AEO, and how is it different from SEO?

AEO is the practice of making your brand the source an AI tool names or links when it answers a question. SEO earns a position in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside the answer itself.

Do not treat AEO as a separate discipline that makes SEO obsolete. Google’s own guidance says the same foundations drive both.

Step 1: Learn the terms people mix up

You will see several acronyms used for the same idea. Here is what each one usually means.

TermStands forWhat it usually refers to
SEOSearch engine optimizationRankings in regular search results
AEOAnswer engine optimizationThe source an AI answer cites or names
GEOGenerative engine optimizationSame goal as AEO, a term that came out of academic research
LLMOLarge language model optimizationWhat AI models say about your brand
AI SEOAI search optimizationAn umbrella term agencies use for all of the above

In practice, AEO and GEO describe the same work. We use AEO because it describes the goal in plain words: be the answer.

Step 2: Know the answer engines that matter in 2026

Each tool pulls answers from a different place. That changes where your effort pays off.

Answer engineReachWhere it gets sources
Google AI Overviews2.5 billion monthly users (Google, 2026)Google’s index, through many background searches
Google AI ModeMore than 1 billion monthly users (Google, May 2026)Google’s index, with deeper fan-out searches
ChatGPT search800 million weekly users (OpenAI, late 2025)OpenAI’s own index plus outside sources
Microsoft CopilotBuilt into Windows, Edge and BingBing’s index
PerplexitySmaller, research-heavy audienceIts own crawler plus search partners

A local roofer lives mostly on Google. A software company may get real pipeline from ChatGPT. Start with the engines your buyers use.

Step 3: Read what Google says

Google’s documentation on AI features is short and direct. It says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. That’s it.

The same page goes further. It says you “don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup” to appear. It also says there is “no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.”

That doesn’t make AEO the same as SEO. Answer engines choose sources differently, and the rest of this guide covers how. But it does mean anyone selling you a secret AEO file or markup is selling something Google says you don’t need.

Step 4: Do the click-loss math

AEO matters because AI answers take clicks away from regular results. Ahrefs research published in 2026 found AI Overviews cut clicks to the top-ranking page by 58%.

Here’s what that looks like for one page.

Before AI OverviewsAfter a 58% drop
Monthly clicks from a top-ranking keyword1,000420
Leads at a 3% conversion rate30About 13
Jobs at a 25% close rate7.5About 3

The ranking didn’t move. The traffic did. So a brand that ranks first but never gets cited in the AI answer is losing ground it can’t see in a rank tracker. That gap is what AEO closes.

2. How should you make sure answer engines can reach your pages?

Check that each AI crawler can access your site, at the robots.txt level and at the CDN level, before you change a word of content. A blocked crawler makes every other AEO tactic worthless.

Do not assume you’re visible because your site ranks in Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude use their own crawlers with their own rules.

Most AEO guides skip this section. It’s also where we find the most costly problems in audits.

Step 1: Know which bots do which job

AI companies run separate bots for separate jobs. OpenAI lists its own in its crawler documentation. Google-Extended is Google’s training control.

User agentWhat it doesIf you block it
OAI-SearchBotFinds pages for ChatGPT search answersYour pages can’t appear as ChatGPT search results
GPTBotCollects content that may train future modelsNo effect on ChatGPT search, per OpenAI
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT torobots.txt may not apply, since a person asked
Google-ExtendedControls use of your content for Gemini model trainingNo effect on Google Search or AI Overviews

The common mistake is a single rule written in 2023 to “block OpenAI.” Some of those rules still catch OAI-SearchBot. The site owner wanted to stop training and ended up leaving ChatGPT search too.

Step 2: Check your CDN, not only robots.txt

On July 1, 2025, Cloudflare began blocking known AI crawlers by default for new domains. The block happens at the network edge, before a request ever reaches your server.

So your robots.txt can say “allow” while your CDN says “no.” If your site moved to Cloudflare in the last year, check its bot settings. Then confirm in your server logs that OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are getting 200 responses, not 403s.

Step 3: Check the new Search Console control

Google added a Search generative AI control to Search Console in 2026. It reached every site worldwide on August 31, 2026. The setting lets a site opt out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover.

Google says the choice is not a ranking signal for regular search. But a site that opts out gets no visibility in those AI features. Make sure nobody on your team switched it off by accident.

Step 4: Keep important content in plain HTML

A Search Engine Land analysis of ChatGPT’s retrieval stack, published in August 2026, found ChatGPT doesn’t run JavaScript. It also rejected any page larger than 4 MB.

So check your most important pages:

  • Prices, service areas and hours appear as real text, not inside images
  • FAQs and specs aren’t hidden in tabs that need JavaScript to open
  • The main content loads without waiting for scripts
  • Page weight stays well under 4 MB

A quick test is to turn off JavaScript in your browser and reload the page. If the prices and hours vanish, answer engines may not see them either.

Step 5: Review snippet controls

Google’s AI features respect the same snippet controls as regular search. A nosnippet tag, data-nosnippet attribute or tight max-snippet value limits what Google can quote.

These tags often get added by a plugin or a past developer and then forgotten. Search your templates for them. A page that can’t show a snippet can’t be quoted in an AI Overview.

3. How should you write pages that answer engines quote?

Put your clearest, most specific answer in the H1 and the first two sentences, then cover the follow-up questions a buyer would ask. Answer engines read the top of the page first, and many never read further.

Do not repeat your target keyword to “signal relevance.” Research shows keyword stuffing lowers AI visibility.

Step 1: Write for the 200-character snippet

The August 2026 Search Engine Land analysis found that ChatGPT’s fast mode often works from a fixed snippet of about 200 characters. That snippet is anchored on the page’s H1. It stays the same no matter what the user asked.

Full page reads were rare. Of 61,332 URLs retrieved in the study, only 1.2% were opened in full, all in the slower “thinking” mode. When a page was opened, it got cited 74% of the time. Pages that were only retrieved got cited 7% of the time.

So if your first 200 characters don’t say what you do and where, the answer engine has little reason to cite you.

Step 2: Rewrite the top of your main pages

Here’s a before and after for a roofing company’s service page. The business is made up for this example.

 BeforeAfter
H1Welcome to Summit RoofingRoof replacement in Denver, most jobs done in two days
First sentenceFor over 25 years, we’ve proudly served our community with quality craftsmanship.Summit Roofing replaces asphalt and tile roofs across Denver and Aurora, with free inspections and written estimates.
Second sentenceContact us today to learn more. Most replacements cost $12,000 to $22,000, and we install GAF and Owens Corning systems.

The “before” version spends its first 200 characters on nothing an AI tool can quote. The “after” version names the service, the city, the timeline, a price range and the brands. That’s text an answer engine can lift straight into an answer.

Step 3: Cover the fan-out questions

Answer engines don’t run one search per question. Google’s documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out,” which means “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.”

Say someone asks, “Who should I call to replace my roof in Denver?” The engine may run separate searches for roofers in Denver, replacement costs in Colorado, hail damage and insurance claims, roofing materials for snow, and local reviews.

Each sub-search is another chance to be found. Here’s the math. Assume each page of yours that appears in a sub-search has a 30% chance of being cited in the final answer.

Chance of at least one citation = 1 − (1 − 0.30)ⁿ

Here, n is the number of sub-searches where one of your pages shows up.

Sub-searches where you appear (n)Chance of at least one citation
130%
251%
476%
688%
894%

The 30% figure is an assumption for the example. But the shape holds at almost any rate. A jump from one relevant page to six raises your odds far more than polishing a single page ever will.

So build a fan-out map for your top three services. List the questions behind the question, then make sure a page or a clear section answers each one.

Step 4: Add numbers and named sources

A Princeton-led study on generative engine optimization, presented at KDD 2024, tested which content changes lifted visibility in AI answers.

On the authors’ test engine, pages that added quotations gained about 41% in visibility. Pages that added statistics gained about 40%. Source citations lifted visibility by about 30%. Keyword stuffing went the other way and cut visibility by about 8%.

Treat the exact figures with care, since they came from a controlled benchmark. The direction is still useful. Specific numbers and named sources help. Repeated keywords hurt.

4. How should you build the authority that answer engines trust?

Get your brand mentioned, by name and with specifics, on the sites and channels that answer engines already pull from. Your own website is only part of the evidence an AI tool weighs.

Do not spend your whole budget on backlinks while ignoring unlinked brand mentions and reviews.

Step 1: Know what the data says about mentions

In May 2026, Ahrefs published an analysis of 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. It compared common brand signals with how often each brand appeared in AI answers.

SignalCorrelation with AI visibility
YouTube mentions0.737
Branded web mentions0.66 to 0.71
Branded anchor text (AI Mode)0.628
Domain Rating0.266 to 0.326
Number of pages on the site0.194

Correlation isn’t proof of cause. Big brands get mentioned more and cited more. Still, the gap is wide. Mentions matter far more than raw link authority or site size.

The YouTube result surprised us most. Ahrefs found the number of videos that mention a brand mattered more than those videos’ view counts. Many small mentions beat one viral one.

Step 2: Start with the sources closest to your buyers

For most businesses, the useful mentions aren’t glamorous. They include:

  • Your Google My Business (GMB) listing, complete and active
  • Review sites your industry uses, like Yelp, Cars.com or trade directories
  • Local news, sponsorships and chamber of commerce pages
  • Industry publications and association member lists
  • YouTube videos from customers, partners and local creators

National brands can add expert quotes in trade press and appearances on podcasts that post to YouTube.

Step 3: Feed Google’s new “Ask” feature

In December 2025, Google began replacing the public Q&A section on GMB listings in Maps with an AI “Ask” button. The answers draw on business owner input and customer reviews, Search Engine Roundtable reported.

That makes your reviews part of your AEO program. A review that says “Great service!” gives the AI nothing to repeat. A review that says “They replaced our hail-damaged roof in Aurora in two days” gives it a specific job and a place.

You can’t script reviews. But you can ask happy customers to mention what you did and where. Most will.

Step 4: Make every source tell the same story

Answer engines compare what different sources say about you. When facts clash, the engine has to pick one, or it skips you for a competitor whose facts line up.

Once a year, check these details across your site, your GMB listing and your top directories:

FactWhere it often goes wrong
Year foundedHomepage says 2008, About page says 2010
Service listAn old blog post lists a service you dropped
Service areasDirectories still show a city you stopped covering
Price rangesA 2022 article quotes prices you no longer charge
Phone and addressAn old listing shows a former location

Then ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode basic questions about your business. Note every wrong answer, find where it came from and fix the source. Recheck in 30 to 60 days.

Step 5: Apply it to your industry

AEO looks different in each vertical. The sources that matter change, and so do the questions buyers ask.

5. How should you measure AEO results?

Track how often your brand appears across a fixed set of prompts, run many times, and pair that with referral data from GA4, Search Console and Bing. One tool never gives the full picture.

Do not judge your visibility from one ChatGPT search on your own phone. One run is an anecdote, not a measurement.

Step 1: Accept that AI answers are unstable

In January 2026, SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews a total of 2,961 times. They found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice. The odds of the same list in the same order were about 1 in 1,000.

The study found one metric that held up: visibility percentage. That’s how often a brand appears across many runs of the same prompt. It stayed fairly stable even when the lists changed. Report that number, not a rank.

Step 2: Run enough prompts to trust the number

A visibility percentage is a proportion. Every proportion has a margin of error that shrinks as you add runs.

Margin of error (95%) = 1.96 × √(p × (1 − p) ÷ n)

Here, p is your visibility rate and n is the number of prompt runs. Say your brand appears in 30% of answers.

Prompt runs per month (n)Margin of errorWhat a “30%” result really means
10±28 pointsAnywhere from 2% to 58%
25±18 points12% to 48%
60±12 points18% to 42%
100±9 points21% to 39%
400±4.5 points25.5% to 34.5%

Ten runs tell you almost nothing. A report built on that sample can swing 20 points in a month with no real change. For most mid-size brands, 50 to 100 prompts per topic, each run a few times a month, is a fair setup. Then judge the trend by quarter, not by month.

Step 3: Use the free reports, and know their gaps

Three free tools added AI reporting in 2026. Each has a blind spot.

ToolWhat it showsWhat it misses
Search Console generative AI reportsImpressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI featuresClicks
GA4 AI Assistant channel (May 2026)Sessions referred by assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and ClaudeGoogle AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks, visits with no referrer
Bing Webmaster Tools citation share (June 2026)Your share of all citations for a query in Copilot and Bing AI answersEvery engine outside Microsoft

Visits from AI apps often arrive with no referrer, so they land in “Direct.” That means GA4 undercounts AI traffic. Add an intake question too. Ask new customers how they found you, and include “ChatGPT or another AI tool” as an option.

Step 4: Tie visibility to revenue

Visibility only matters if it brings in business. Here’s a worked example for a local service company. Swap in your own numbers.

Assume AI referral visitors convert to leads at 4%, you close 25% of leads and each job earns $3,000 in gross profit.

AI referral sessions per monthLeadsJobsMonthly gross profit
602.40.6$1,800
1204.81.2$3,600
2409.62.4$7,200

Remember that GA4 undercounts this channel. The real number is usually higher than what the report shows. Use the intake question to close part of the gap.

Step 5: Set a realistic timeline

Technical fixes, like unblocking a crawler, can show up within weeks once engines recrawl your site. Content changes usually take one to three months. Authority work, like earning mentions and reviews, takes six months or more.

Set a baseline before you change anything. Then review the full picture every quarter.

AEO checklist

  • OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot can reach your site
  • Your CDN isn’t blocking AI crawlers by default
  • The Search Console generative AI control is on, unless you chose otherwise
  • Prices, hours and service areas show up as plain text with JavaScript turned off
  • Top pages load under 4 MB
  • No stray nosnippet or tight max-snippet tags on important pages
  • Each main page’s H1 and first two sentences name your service, your area and a specific detail
  • You’ve mapped fan-out questions for your top three services
  • Pages use real numbers and named sources, not repeated keywords
  • You haven’t paid for llms.txt or FAQ schema as an AEO fix
  • Your GMB listing is complete, and reviews mention specific services and places
  • Business facts match across your site, GMB and major directories
  • You earn mentions in videos, local press and industry sites
  • You track visibility percentage across a fixed prompt set with enough runs
  • Search Console, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools are all set up
  • Your intake form asks if customers found you through AI

AEO rewards the basics done well

You don’t need to buy AEO as a separate product on top of SEO. Answer engines search the web and cite the clearest, most trusted source they find. That rewards businesses whose pages answer real questions at the top and whose reputation holds up across the web.

The work that matters most is often the least exciting. Check your crawler access. Rewrite the top of the five pages that bring in the most business. Clean up the facts on your listings. Then measure with enough data to know what changed.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It's the practice of getting your brand cited or named in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.Run the prompts from a logged-out session and test each important question multiple times because AI responses can vary.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO earns rankings in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside the AI answer. Google says the same foundations, like crawlable and helpful pages, drive both.Look at which sources are being cited for your competitors and compare those sources with your own presence across the web.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

There's very little difference. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is a term that came out of academic research. AEO describes the same goal. Most agencies use the two interchangeably.Focus on accurate Product, Organization, JewelryStore or LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and other appropriate standard structured data.

Does FAQ schema help with AEO?

Not directly. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. The markup does no harm, but clear answers written on the page matter far more than the schema around them.

How do I track AEO results?

Track your visibility percentage across a fixed set of prompts, with each prompt run many times. Then add Search Console's generative AI reports, the GA4 AI Assistant channel and Bing's citation share.

How long does AEO take to work?

Crawler fixes can show up within weeks. Content changes usually take one to three months. Mentions and reviews build over six months or more.
